About the brand and products
What types of rice does Royal Chef offer?
We offer Ponni Boiled Rice, Ponni Raw Rice, Jeerakashala Rice, Basmati Rice, and Idly Rice — each suited to different everyday cooking needs.
What's the difference between Ponni Boiled Rice and Ponni Raw Rice?
Ponni Boiled Rice is parboiled before milling, giving it a firmer texture, higher nutrient retention, and a slightly different aroma — popular for everyday meals and sambar rice. Ponni Raw Rice is milled without parboiling, resulting in softer, whiter grains often preferred for idli batter, curd rice, and lighter dishes.
What is Jeerakashala Rice used for?
Jeerakashala is a small-grained, fragrant rice traditionally used in Kerala for biryanis and payasam. Its short grain and distinct aroma make it different from Basmati.
How is Jeerakashala different from Basmati Rice?
Jeerakashala has short, plump grains with an earthy aroma and is a Kerala speciality. Basmati has long, slender grains that elongate on cooking, with a more floral fragrance — commonly used in North Indian biryanis and pulao.
What is Idly Rice best used for?
Idly Rice is a parboiled short-grain rice specifically suited for making soft, fluffy idlis and dosas, due to its starch content and texture when ground into batter.
Cooking and usage
What's the ideal water-to-rice ratio?
It differs by variety. Ponni Boiled Rice takes about 1 cup rice to 2.5 cups water; Ponni Raw Rice about 1 to 2. Boiled rice generally needs slightly more water and a little longer than raw rice. Each product page lists its own instructions.
Can Idly Rice be used for dosa batter too?
Yes. Some cooks prefer a mix of raw rice and Idly Rice for a crisper dosa, while Idly Rice alone gives a softer result.
How long should the rice be soaked before cooking?
About 30 to 45 minutes for everyday cooking. For idli and dosa batter, soak Idly Rice and urad dal separately for four to six hours before grinding.

Nutrition
What's the nutritional difference between boiled and raw rice?
Boiled (parboiled) rice generally retains more B vitamins and has a lower glycemic impact than raw milled rice, because parboiling moves nutrients from the bran into the grain before milling.
Is this rice suitable for diabetics?
Ponni Boiled Rice is the more suitable choice, as parboiled rice has a lower glycemic impact than raw milled rice. Portion size and overall diet still matter most — please speak to your doctor or a nutritionist about your own situation.
